On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, Berlin-based jewelry label JOHANNA GAUDER had invited guests to the opening of its newly designed studio at Schillerpromenade 14 in Neukölln. In collaboration with the renowned studio Christoph Hauf, the space was completely reimagined, creating a seamless connection between the brand’s philosophy, its jewelry, and the architectural design. The pop-up exhibition and opening event, held on February 15, 2025, marked the public unveiling of the space and offered an exclusive preview of Collection #8, symbolizing a new chapter for JOHANNA GAUDER.
Symbiosis of design and craftsmanship
As part of the relaunch of its studio space, JOHANNA GAUDER collaborated closely with Studio Christoph Hauf to completely redesign the interior—both functionally and conceptually. The result was a multifunctional space that now serves as a showroom, consultation room, and event venue, embodying the organic working methods and evolving identity of the JOHANNA GAUDER label. With a clear, material-driven design language and a sophisticated lighting concept, the jewelry was presented in an environment that seamlessly blended exclusivity with openness.
Christoph Hauf had explained that, in contrast to typical furniture design, he intentionally avoided lacquers and coatings. “In jewelry, materials are handled very differently compared to furniture. I wanted to break thisboundary and not use lacquers or coatings-instead materials that absorb traces, have clearshapes and reveal the essentials,” he said. “For the benches, tables and stools,we work with custom-made connectors made of up to 12 mm thick, untreated aluminum plates.Over time, these will pick up fingerprints and contribute to the history of the room.”
Jewelry as a mirror of the studio: Collection #8 in dialogue with the design
The newly unveiled Collection #8 was conceived as a wearable homage to both the new spatial direction and Christoph Hauf’s custom furniture designs. The collection, consisting of nine formally and graphically interwoven pieces, was showcased for the first time during the opening. Its distinct geometric lines reflected and interpreted spatial elements from the studio’s redesign, creating a direct dialogue between architecture and adornment. The collection is handmade in the Berlin studio using recycled silver, with prices ranging from €100 to €600, and officially became available in March 2025.
Johanna Gauder noted that the creative exchange during the development of the furniture and room concept had deeply enriched the jewelry design process. According to her, “The creative exchange on the development of the furniture and the room concept significantly enriched the design process for the jewelry,” says Johanna Gauder. “The furniture inspiredthe jewelry, and the jewelry in turn cast new perspectives on the furniture. This interaction between art, craftsmanship and design is at the heart of this project.”
The new space as a place of encounter and creativity
The studio space not only expressed the label’s aesthetic ethos but also invited the community into a creative and interactive environment. Constructed with raw materials such as aluminum, Douglas fir wood, glass, and linoleum, the space offered a calm, intentional atmosphere. Additional features like mirrored surfaces, layered textiles, and strategically placed lighting enhanced the immersive experience, emphasizing the connection between jewelry and architecture.
Both designers also prioritized sustainability in material choice and execution. The wood was sourced from responsibly managed forests in Baden-Württemberg, the mirrors and glass were locally produced, the textiles made from recycled yarns, and the paints were water-based—aligning with JOHANNA GAUDER’s high standards for ethical production.
Reflecting on the project, Johanna Gauder shared that redesigning a space so familiar to her fulfilled her need for both change and continuity. She described the new studio as an extension of her creative process—a place that not only showcases her work but also invites dialogue and connection.
Cooperation with Christoph Hauf-a long-term collaboration
The transformation of the space took about a year and followed several phases. It also marked a continuation of Gauder and Hauf’s long-standing creative relationship. In 2021, Gauder had designed the mobile “Cilar” for Hauf’s company, boee—a graceful construction of curved borosilicate glass crescents first unveiled at Maison & Objet. This prior collaboration already hinted at the possibilities of jewelry in a spatial context, laying the groundwork for the studio redesign.
“Christoph understands my way of working and shares my aesthetic values,” Gauder reflected. “It was a pleasure to work with him to create a space that is both functional and inspiring.”
