Environmental consciousness has grown to become a necessary topic of discussion in society. Hence, companies are beginning to pull their weight towards a sustainable future.

Among the many industries striving to pay attention to the environment, the textile sector stands out for its significant impact on the environment. This post spotlights Getzner Textil, an Austrian fabric company that is making efforts to redefine what it means to be a responsible textile manufacturer.

What is Getzner Textil?

Founded over 200 years ago, this family-owned Austrian company has grown from its humble beginnings to become a global leader in textile innovation, all while embracing sustainability at its core.

So, how exactly is Getzner Textil making waves in terms of eco-efforts?

How Is Getzner Textil Making Environmental Efforts?

Let’s take a look at how this Austrian textile company is making sustainable environmental efforts.

Sustainable Sourcing

The journey towards eco-friendliness begins at the source. Getzner Textil understands this well, which is why they prioritise sustainable sourcing of raw materials. Every fibre used in their fabrics undergoes rigorous scrutiny to ensure it meets the highest environmental and ethical standards. For instance, “only high-quality extra-long staple cotton—mainly PIMA and SUPIMA—is used for the entire shirting product range produced in Europe.” More so, apart from getting linen from France, the company takes pride in also sourcing raw materials in town to keep distance and quality in check. According to Gerhard Leitner, “Right up to the finished product, we do everything in-house. This also gives us more opportunities in our hands to influence the production process.”

Innovative Production Method

Manufacturing textiles traditionally involves copious amounts of water, energy, and chemicals, leading to pollution and waste. However, Getzner Textil is rewriting this narrative through innovation. Their production facilities are equipped with the latest cutting-edge technologies that minimise water usage, reduce energy consumption, and eliminate harmful chemicals from the production process. Due to this measure, Getzner has been able to reduce the specific heat requirement in production at Bludenz by a quarter since 2009. In fact, in 2014, the company received the “klimaaktiv” award from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism as part of the climate protection initiative. Ultimately, the company has been able to establish a manufacturing process that is environmentally friendly.

Transparent Supply Chain

In the textile industry, transparency breeds trust. Getzner Textil understands this, which is why they are committed to maintaining a transparent supply chain. From disclosing their suppliers to providing detailed information about their production processes, they are empowering consumers to make informed choices about the products they purchase. On behalf of the company, Alexander Hofstadler explains, “The careful use of resources has always been important to us, and now we are also showing this more to the outside world and making our work even more transparent for consumers.”.

Effective Use of Waste

As a result of its hydropower plants, Getzner generates more electricity than it needs. Consequently, it has made an ample contribution to the energy autonomy of the region. As part of its sustainable efforts, this waste is being put to good use. For instance, the company uses the waste heat from production to supply district heating to schools, public buildings, and public outdoor and indoor swimming pools. According to the company, the total CO2 savings achieved by the district heating network are about 1,000 tonnes per year.

Final Note

As a result of Getzner Textil’s sustainability efforts, a lot more companies are beginning to pay attention to their partners’ ecological efforts. The company is seen as a benchmark. This would make other companies sit tight in their efforts towards sustainability. This is how the environment gets safer—when every company or individual plays their part to reduce the harm of production in society.
