Classic Movies to make your Valentine’s Day memorable in 2024

A curated selection of classic romance movies with a Valentine's Day theme, perfect for a cozy and memorable movie night in 2024

It’s hard to decide what the greatest love story of all time should be, but there is a widely accepted opinion that love might be the greatest of all themes. Love seems to be a common ground for all humans, a universal emotion, perhaps the strongest of all emotions. Strong, complex, and an inseparable part of human life.

We are all very well aware of the complexity and grandness of this emotion. We all secretly or openly love a good love story. A love story can be written in a thousand different ways, with situations and in languages we do not identify with but that we watch as a reminder of what we yearn for or once had. We recognise the key players: sacrifice, fear, anxiety, pleasure, trust, commitment, and hurt—all evoking a common feeling.

Since it’s officially love month, shall we bring back the great classic romantic movies that had us all glued to our screens?

This valentine’s day, watch these classic movies

TITANIC (1997)

THE NOTEBOOK (2004)

The movie is an adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ The Notebook. Here, love goes beyond mere passion or the random feeling of affection. The romance between Noah and Allie reveals the immortality of love, undefeated by trials or death. This might be the most beautiful ending yet: two lovers dying together in bed after a lifetime together. CASABLANCA (1942)

A difficult love triangle in the middle of the Second World War. Are not all love triangles tedious? With the old flame rekindled, up against duty and loyalty, Ilsa and Rick, her old lover, must make a choice.

THE BEST MAN (1999)

Oh, the forgiving power of love! Taye Diggs plays Harper Steward in this comedy romance as a writer and Lance’s (Morris Chestnut) best man for his coming wedding. Having given up his old wayward ways, Lance looks forward to a new beginning with the love of his life. Harper has to come clean about his one-night stand with Mia, Lance’s bride, back in college. It all takes a messy turn when Lance reads Harper’s book and finds out. With love comes drama, betrayal, and hurt, but also forgiveness.

SLUM DOG MILLIONAIRE (2008)

Slum Dog Millionaire takes your emotions on a roller coaster. Jamal becomes a participant on the show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire as his last attempt to reunite with his kind-lost childhood friend and lover, Latika. Orphaned and displaced in the slum of Mumbai, Jamal, Salim, his brother, and Latika are thrown at the mercy of life and street gangsters. They lose their innocence but the love in their hearts.

LATE SPRING (1949)

Late Spring is a classic Japanese film directed by Yasujiro Ozu. This isn’t a romance story, but it is about love all the same: the love of a father and the sacrifice he must make to set the path for his daughter to experience the joys of marriage, companionship, and love. We might never fully grasp why love must sometimes be accompanied by the greatest forms of sacrifice.

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER (1967)

Love strikes between a Caucasian woman and a black man at a time when interracial marriage is still declared illegal in certain states in America. Joanna Drayton and John Prentice’s intention to get married is met, as expected by strong resistance from Joanna and John’s fathers, who are more concerned about the social acceptance and the discrimination the two would face.
