Jessica Jane Molebatsi Presents 'Toiles du Sud' Collection at Shanghai MODE Showroom 2025

South African fashion designer Jessica Jane Molebatsi, under the rebranded label Molebatsi, is set to unveil her highly anticipated “Toiles du Sud” collection at the Shanghai MODE Showroom in 2025. This presentation marks a significant step in her mission to bridge cultural divides and celebrate the beauty of cross-cultural exchange through fashion.

The “Toiles du Sud” collection, meaning “Canvas of the South,” is the third instalment in Molebatsi’s series of African Toiles de Jouy prints. Building upon the success of the Noluthando and Rakgadi Collections, this latest offering is designed to evoke a sense of shared nostalgia and connection to the South African homeland. Inside the “Toiles du Sud” Collection

Molebatsi’s journey to Shanghai is rooted in a profound belief in the power of fashion to foster understanding and dialogue. Following insights gained from her travels to China, Jessica Jane Molebatsi recognised an opportunity to create a collection that blends the rich tapestry of South African culture with the intricate craftsmanship of Chinese design. The “Toiles du Sud” collection is a testament to this vision, featuring signature pieces such as the Hanfu Robe and Bomber Jacket, alongside contemporary interpretations of traditional South African garments.

“Our aim is to create a cultural exchange that transcends geographical boundaries,” says Jessica Jane Molebatsi. “Through ‘Toiles du Sud,”‘ we are inviting a global audience to experience the beauty of South African heritage, while also celebrating the artistry and sophistication of Chinese craftsmanship.”

Sustainability and Craftsmanship: Pillars of the Collection

Molebatsi’s commitment to sustainability is evident in the collection’s use of natural fibres and slow fashion practices. The brand prioritises ethical sourcing and craftsmanship, ensuring that each garment is not only a work of art but also a testament to responsible design.

Key Pieces: Craftsmanship, Meaning & Sustainability

The “Toiles du Sud” collection features a curated selection of key pieces that exemplify the fusion of cultural influences and meticulous craftsmanship. The Southern Hanfu Robe, a fully lined cotton twill garment, artfully merges the silhouette of a traditional kimono with South African design sensibilities. The Hanfu Bomber Jacket, an oversized statement piece, is crafted with a luxurious silk lining and showcases the collection’s signature “Toiles du Sud” print. The Punch Needle Oversized Sleeveless Coat, a contemporary interpretation of the traditional South African “Umbaco” coat, features intricate punch needling, demonstrating a dedication to artisanal techniques. Completing the selection is the Tracktop, fashioned from 100% cotton corduroy stretch fabric, distinguished by its large, faced collar, offering a modern, yet refined aesthetic.
