Caring for dyed hair requires special attention to maintain health. I love the idea of trying out different hair colours. It is absolutely thrilling to match outfits with your hair colour or have the sun reflect beautifully on it. However, I am also conscious of the lasting changes and the potential damage to the hair. You might have your doubts, like I did, about hair dyes and the effects they have on the hair. With great beauty comes great responsibility; with the right care, you can have it all. It would be a win to maintain full hair volume and length with colour in it. When it comes to hair dyes, here is how to eat your cake and have it.

What’s up with dyeing?
During the application process, a number of chemical breakdowns occur that enable the colour alterations on the hair strands. The hair cuticle, which serves as a protective layer, is opened up to allow the dye to penetrate the hair shafts. The natural pigmentation of the hair is also broken down to allow the dyes’ colour to sit well into the hair. After this process, the cuticle is closed up to trap the dye.
The chemical process of dyeing, especially with permanent dyes, can alter the texture of your hair. It may become drier, more porous, or prone to damage, particularly if you bleach it or use high levels of developer.
Care and Maintenance
- Avoid frequent dyeing. When touching up the roots, also avoid applying dye to the previously dyed hair, as this can cause over-processing and damage.
- For wash days, go for products suitable for colour-treated hair. Limit the number of washdays to avoid over-manipulating. Always rinse your hair with cold or lukewarm water, as hot water opens the hair cuticle, allowing colour to escape and hastening fading. Chlorine and saltwater can be harsh on dyed hair, causing the colour to fade. If you swim, wear a swim cap or rinse your hair immediately after swimming.
- Dyed hair can become stripped of nutrients, dry, and brittle. Use a deep conditioning protein treatment after a dye session and a regular treatment once a week to keep your hair moisturised and healthy. Do not wear your hair without leave-in conditioners and serums. They help lock in moisture and protect your hair from environmental damage.
- Minimize, or better yet, avoid, the use of heat styling tools like flat irons and curling wands. If you must use them, apply a heat-protectant spray to shield your hair from damage. UV rays from the sun can fade hair colour. Wear a hat or use a UV-protectant spray to shield your hair from the sun when outdoors.
