FAB: And big congratulations on the launch of your collection! Can you tell us more about what inspired you to pursue sustainability? What’s your story?

Elise Daniel Bags: The inspiration behind our pursuit of sustainability stems from a deep-rooted belief in responsible fashion practices. We just wanted to create something that was stylish and environmentally friendly. I was inspired by a Sunglass brand that makes glasses with removable frames to interchange with different colour frames. I had an idea to do the same but with handbags.

FAB: What motivated you to focus specifically on creating sustainable bags, and what sets your designs apart in terms of sustainability?

Elise Daniel Bags: We were motivated to focus on sustainable bags to offer a stylish and eco-conscious alternative to traditional leather products. Our designs stand out in terms of sustainability due to our approach and focus on creating fashionable handbags while still focusing on using eco-friendly, sustainable materials during production. Even though being 100% sustainable can be challenging, as we are currently using vegan leather, we are in communication with suppliers from India about a possible upcoming partnership to produce leather from upcycled banana stems. This innovative approach could set us apart in the sustainable fashion landscape.

FAB: Can you walk us through your design process for creating sustainable bags, from sourcing materials to production techniques?

Elise Daniel Bags: Our design process begins with sourcing materials that meet our strict sustainability criteria. We carefully select vegan leather and plan to incorporate upcycled banana stem leather into our production. Our production techniques prioritise environmental sustainability, from cutting and stitching to packaging. In terms of packaging, in Canada, we reach out to certain stores that offer their excess boxes originally intended for disposal; we re-use these boxes as shipping containers. This initiative promotes sustainability by reducing the need for additional packaging production and minimising waste.

FAB: What challenges have you encountered in the pursuit of sustainability, and how have you overcome them?

Elise Daniel Bags: One of the main challenges we’ve encountered is finding suppliers and partners who share our commitment to sustainability. However, we have overcome this by conducting thorough research and establishing relationships with like-minded organizations. Additionally, sourcing sustainable materials at scale can be challenging, but we continuously explore innovative solutions to address this.

FAB: Have you partnered with any organisations or initiatives to further your commitment to sustainability? If so, what has that experience been like?

Elise Daniel Bags: We are in the process of partnering with suppliers in India to produce leather from upcycled banana stems, which will further our commitment to sustainability. This experience has been incredibly rewarding, as it allows us to support sustainable practices and make a positive impact on the local communities.

FAB: As an emerging sustainable designer based in Canada, do you find that there is a growing demand for sustainable fashion and accessories in the Canadian market?

Elise Daniel Bags: As an emerging sustainable designer in Canada, we have observed a growing demand for sustainable fashion and accessories in the Canadian market. Consumers are increasingly conscious of the environmental and ethical implications of their purchases, driving the demand for sustainable options.

FAB: How do you engage with consumers to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable fashion choices?

Elise Daniel Bags: We engage with consumers through various channels, such as social media and collaborations. We use these platforms to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable fashion choices, educating consumers about the benefits of choosing eco-friendly products and practices.

FAB: Beyond sustainability, are there any other values or principles that you aim to promote through your designs and brand ethos?

Elise Daniel Bags: In addition to sustainability, we aim to promote transparency, inclusivity, and innovation through our designs and brand ethos. We believe in creating a positive impact on society and the environment through our actions and choices.

FAB: What advice would you give to other emerging designers who are interested in incorporating sustainability into their practice?

Elise Daniel Bags: For other emerging designers interested in incorporating sustainability in their practice, we advise starting small and focusing on one aspect of sustainability at a time. Whether it’s materials, production methods, or packaging, every effort counts. Collaborating with like-minded partners and organisations can also help amplify your impact.

FAB: Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations for the future of your sustainable bag brand?

Elise Daniel Bags: Looking ahead, our goals and aspirations for our sustainable bag brand include expanding our product line to offer a wider range of sustainable accessories (different styles in different sizes). We also aim to further reduce our environmental footprint by exploring new eco-friendly materials and production techniques. Ultimately, we strive to be a leader in sustainable fashion, inspiring others to join us on this journey towards a more sustainable future.

FAB: What is your hair-grooming routine like?

Elise Daniel Bag: My hair-grooming routine involves a few key steps to keep my hair healthy and looking its best. I start by washing my hair with shampoo and conditioner, focusing on my scalp and roots. I then use a wide-tooth comb to detangle my hair before applying a leave-in conditioner to help with moisture and manageability. Overall, my routine is simple and focused on maintaining the health and natural beauty of my hair.

FAB: Can you share your favourite fashion investment pieces?

Elise Daniel Bag: My favourite fashion investment pieces are just plain, simple white air forces. I like to stick to basic colours because they can match many outfits and can go with a classy or casual outfit.
