Once, I had planned a getaway with my girlfriends at a resort for the weekend. It was something we had looked forward to for so long; it was meant to be a fun-filled experience. We planned to start off the evening serenaded by the live band resident at the resort before heading into town for a responsibly wild night *wink wink*.
It was about to be an amazing getaway, but my girls cancelled at the last minute. I thought the evening was ruined. The high point of the mini vacation was some time out with my friends. Caught in between cancelling reservations and going out all by myself, I weighed my options. Result? I had one of the most amazing weekends of my life, and this was how:
- Be in the moment
First, I realised that I could be all the fun I wanted to be. Second, I allowed myself to participate in every activity we had planned for the weekend. Why be an onlooker when I can be the show? Rather than sit and watch the band play away. I danced. I thought the arcade would not be fun without my girls, but it was great. Don’t just stay in the background; be a part of your vacation.
- Confidence
For a solo getaway, confidence is your best outfit. Confidence is the biggest hack to enjoying a solo getaway. If you wear it well, you’ll make other people want to be you. If I have decided to take a weekend trip, then the weekend has to be about me. Be fab, be bold.
- Mingle
I got myself two significant acquaintances without my friends. I looked fab, no doubt, but I exuded an unbelievable aura of confidence. It was the first night, and I was really determined to enjoy the two days alone. I walked into the concert, and I headed to the front row. Unknown to me, I had inspired a fellow lone wolf. She walked up right behind me and asked to take the seat next to me.
- Enjoy
What’s stopping you anyway? Allow yourself to enjoy the activities. You would be right to call me “Minister of Enjoyment” because, again, why not? Don’t just be there; enjoy it. Savour the cuisine, feel the water on your skin, and feel the sand beneath your feet. Go on the merry go round; scream your lungs out. Laugh. Enjoy!
- Never say No
I’ll be cautious, but I won’t say no to fun or a promised good time. Wanna loosen up and have fun? Say yes. When the two strangers asked for seats next to me, I said yes. Wanna go for a swim? Yes. Wanna join the games? Yes please! There’s no fun in saying no. (Except drugs)
It’s possible to have a whole weekend planned and not enjoy one moment of it. Try my tips, and you’ll have a blast. Get used to loving your own company.
