Three top destinations to visit for a sustainable getaway

Scenic eco-friendly travel destination showcasing nature, sustainability, and luxury tourism

An increasing number of us are becoming aware of the impact that our everyday life has on the world around us. Climate change no longer feels like an issue that’s purely the responsibility of big corporations or governments – we’ve all got a part to play. The balance, however, comes with finding sustainable solutions that still give us the level of quality that we’re looking for, both in products and experiences.

One of the areas where you won’t want to compromise will be your vacation destination. But you’re in luck: many countries in the world are embracing luxury eco-tourism, creating experiences that are both sustainable and provide all the comfort you could desire. In this post, we showcase a few of the destinations where you really can have it all.

New Zealand

New Zealand is a country that embraces the outdoors, so it’s no surprise that it’s also a sustainable destination. One example of this is dolphin and whale watching. Kaikōura is a coastal town on the South Island that is famed for the opportunity to spot these amazing creatures in their natural habitat. However, instead of allowing overtourism and causing disruption to these marine ecosystems, all tour operators must have a legitimate permit, issued by the Department of Conservation.

New Zealand is also home to the Māori people, who have a deep connection to the land. Responsible tourism focuses on preserving tribal culture and introducing you to the rich heritage of the Māori without disrespecting their traditions.

Additionally, Wellington has been named one of the top ten foodie destinations to visit by Original Travel – so if you’re looking for something delicious to eat after a day of adventure, then you’ll be all set.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is home to 6% of the world’s biodiversity, with everything from volcanic mountain ranges to savannas to explore. 25% of the country is designated as a conservation area, and 30% is protected as national parks and reserves. It’s clear then, that this is a country that is deeply committed to sustainability.

As a result, it’s also home to some of the best eco-accomodation in the world, with everything from treehouses to jungle villas, where you can surround yourself with nature. There are two certification of sustainable tourism (CST) criteria used in addition to a standard hotel star rating: basic and elite, with elite demonstrating the highest commitment to protecting the environment.

Bhutan

If you’ve heard of Bhutan, it might be because of its Gross National Happiness Index. Coined by the 4th King of Bhutan in 1970, the king wanted to examine happiness as a measure of success, rather than just gross domestic product. And so what better place to visit to relax and feel rejuvenated?

Bhutan is also the world’s first carbon-negative country, thanks to the sheer volume of forests, as well as the government’s commitment to sustainable resource use. The government also promotes clean energy use, with hydropower being the main source of energy across the country. The motto of tourism in Bhutan is “high value, low impact” – so you be sure a vacation here is truly sustainable in every sense of the word.

Where will you go next?

These are just a few of the places you could visit for a sustainable vacation. There are plenty more countries and hotels that are doing their best to do the right thing, all across the globe.

Wherever you go, make sure to consider your own habits and the impact that you’re having as you travel. By reducing plastic waste, booking ethical tours, reducing food waste and ensuring you’re giving back to the local community, you can enjoy a vacation that’s good for your heart and for the planet.
