The Lissome Presents Slow Style Chronicle at BFW

Elegant designs from The Lissome's Slow Style Chronicle featured at Berlin Fashion Week, capturing the essence of slow fashion

For Berlin Fashion Week SS25, we brought to life The Lissome magazine’s guidebook of slow makers and designers, The Book of Kin, through an exhibition of brands, a panel discussion, and a workshop. With its guidebook, The Lissome aims to nurture a growing regenerative movement in fashion and textiles. Its carefully curated selection of slow makers and brands highlights how fashion, clothing, and textiles can enhance the well-being of communities and the natural world. Stay up to date on the latest in fashion, arts, beauty, and lifestyle by following FAB L’Style Magazine.

In partnership with the SO/ Berlin Das Stue, The Lissome invited their guests to the Bel Etage salon to contemplate how our “being in relationship” with the material world reflects how we are in relationship with each other and nature. Today, the production and consumption of harmfully produced goods, which quickly end up as waste, is continuously accelerating. We risk the health of our earthly home for goods that don’t take good care of us and won’t last for a season. But couldn’t it be different? Couldn’t we aspire for fashion to build a rich network of reciprocal relationships and mutual responsibility to create caring and lasting bonds between fashion lovers and the origins of their garments: the landscapes, fibres, and skilled hands of designers and makers?

Panel Discussion

Following this thought, The Lissome gathered like-minded changemakers for a panel talk titled “From Soil to Story: Blueprints for Sustainable Fashion, Paving the Way with Creativity, Conscious-Making, and Networks of Care.” Dr. Mila Burcikova, reader in fashion systems @lcflondon_ @sustfash, Kristína Šipulová, fashion designer and hand weaver @kristinasipulova, Dr. Florian Öxler, Archivist @drhauschka.de and Dörte de Jesus, founder and creative director of @thelissome were in conversation with panel host Hardeep Kaur, London based writer, designer, and podcaster @perse.london.

Dörte de Jesus, founder and creative director @thelissome: “I am grateful that through our inaugural Berlin Fashion Week event, we presented a new pathway for fashion, one that is rooted in reciprocity, well-being, and a deep love for beauty and craft. In the last decade, a movement of slow and discerning designers has been growing out of site from the spotlight, taking the lead from slow food and bringing a new appreciation for healthy soil and raw materials, preserving traditional textile crafts under threat from extinction, and understanding that caring and accountable relationships matter. It’s been a joy to bring them together in partnership with Dr. Hauschka, the pionier in natural cosmetics, and SO/ Berlin Das Stue in the first of hopefully many more showcases to come.”

“At Dr. Hauschka, we are not driven by extraneous interests and profit maximization, but rather ensure the company’s idea of providing healing impulses to the world and thus protecting it. The founding impulse of self-responsibility and self-determination still enables us today to work with dedication to every detail in the value chain, preserving Dr. Hauschka’s treasured heritage. When I set up the company’s archive in 2010, my phone rarely rang. Now, many employees contact me because they want to add things to the collection or are looking for historical contexts. Why do we do things the way we do them – I explore these questions with the help of our historical sources. This is essential for the brand’s identity and valuable for all like-minded thinkers and makers,” says Dr. Florian Öxler, Dr. Hauschka archivist.

After the panel talk, the guests could try their hands on some lino cut and textile printing in an accompanying workshop by the fashion brand Avenir.

Audience Engagement

Throughout the afternoon, the audience got to know and interacted with the brands of The Book of Kin guide in real life, exploring their stories and ways of production, making and craftsmanship firsthand while trying on the garments and accessories. The showcase included seven fashion designers and six accessories brands from Germany and international brands (Slovakia, Kenya, Uruguay, Japan, and Portugal).

This event has been created as an invitation for everyone to consider – instead of mourning the darkness, let us shine the lights. The designers and makers of this showcase are already paving the path.
