The idea the oversized-puff sleeves in the renaissance period was taken to the full extreme over a period of a few years in the Edwardian era from about 1890 to 1899 and then it discarded quick and got forgotten.
It’s popularity re-emerged of the early 1890s and once again in the 1930s as a response to the decade’s prior’s focus on shapeless silhouettes and androgynous styles.
Moving on a few decades later as i evolve through my design business, I have re-invented the puff sleeve in all that puff and all those layers emphasising the shoulder and bringing out that slimming effect, with a little peep-back element to showcase the back.
“If anything defines the 1890s it would be Anne and Marilla’s conversation. Ridiculous over sensible. Excess over budget. Dreams over reality……..”
