The internet is abuzz with praise for the exquisite blend of tradition and modernity embodied in Team Mongolia’s uniforms for the Paris Olympics 2024. The outfits, designed by the renowned Mongolian couture brand Michel & Amazonka, have been noted for their seamless blend of cultural heritage and contemporary fashion.

Mongolia’s Olympics Uniform Craftsmanship

Unveiled on Instagram earlier this month, the outfits feature intricate embroidery that pays homage to Mongolia’s rich traditions. Emblems of the sun, moon, and mythical Gua-Maral deer from Mongolian folklore are beautifully interwoven with the Olympic torch and the Paris Olympics emblem, creating a visual narrative that is both culturally profound and visually striking.

The uniforms include ceremonial earrings and embroidered bags for female athletes and traditional archery hats, belts, and boots for male flag-bearers. The deel, a traditional Mongolian gown, has been reimagined to reflect contemporary aesthetics while honouring ancient customs.

The Designer – Michel & Amazonka

The designers behind these stunning uniforms, sisters Michel and Amazonka Choigaalaa, have a track record of creating brilliant Olympic attire. This year’s ensembles took three months to complete, with each piece requiring approximately 20 hours of meticulous craftsmanship. Detailed measurements of each athlete ensured a perfect fit, while the use of Mongolia’s national colours and traditional patterns imbued each uniform with a note of national pride. This isn’t the first time Michel & Amazonka have brought Mongolia’s culture to the Olympic stage. The brand also designed the team’s uniforms for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, consistently impressing audiences with their innovative yet culturally rooted designs. With over 30 athletes competing in nine different sports, Team Mongolia will proudly showcase Michel & Amazonka’s creations during the opening ceremony on July 26. This year’s team hopes to build on Mongolia’s legacy of Olympic achievements, which includes gold medals in judo and boxing at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Mongolia’s uniforms are part of a broader trend of standout Olympic attire celebrating national identity. Other notable examples include Team Haiti’s vibrant uniforms, featuring artwork by Philippe Dodard and designed by Stella Jean, and Team Nigeria’s green-and-white sportswear by Actively Black. These designs highlight the importance of cultural expression in global sporting events, demonstrating how fashion can celebrate a nation’s heritage and values. However, Michel & Amazonka have set a new and high standard for Olympic fashion, ensuring that these uniforms will be remembered long after the games have ended.
