Fashion Icon: Cycling Shorts

Cycling shorts –  having made an appearance at summer 2019 catwalks, this trend will be continued for summer 2020. This time around, they are easier to wear, paired with an XXL shirt or feminine blazer. The style looks athletic, stylish and effortless. Several Fashion labels have shown their version, especially take a look @ the classy one.

How it started:

The cycling short was derived, as the name suggests, from cycling. At the end of the nineteenth century, cycling became available to everyone, in the first instance, people wore their everyday clothing on their bikes. Years later, the hand-knitted black wool shorts came into fashion. The wool had an advantage: the short stayed warm in all weather conditions. The disadvantage: the wool was abrasive at the saddle. To prevent this, the crotch of the cycling shorts was lined with soft mountain goatskin. This is, in short, the story of the origin of the cycling short. By the late 1940s, the new owner Armando Castelli of Milanese tailoring company Vittore Gianni had introduced the silk jersey suit to the cycling community, this was lighter and cooler than the earlier wool version.

In the 1980s, other athletes also became interested in the elastic pants. Without the special crosspiece, it is perfect for sports like aerobics. Or tennis, as the tennis player Andre Agassi demonstrates with a brightly colored piece in denim.

In the 1990s, Princess Diana inspired us with her mid-90s garb: a boxy sweatshirt on top, and basic bike shorts, tall sport socks, and sneakers on bottom.

The cycling short has been making a real comeback in recent seasons. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, the Jenner family and leading fashion designers such as Fendi, Chanel, Prada, and Stella McCartney have all shown variations on the trend.
