As I sit here, pen poised and mind buzzing with memories of my recent adventure, I can’t help but feel compelled to share the marvel that is the Three Camel Lodge. Located amidst the starkly serene expanse of the Gobi Desert, this ecolodge is not just a place to lay your head—it’s a home of sustainability, a haven of hospitality, and a gateway to the soul of Mongolia. Walk with me.

NOTE: Three Camel Lodge is 1 hour by Land Rover from Dalanzadgad, which can be reached on regional flights from Ulaanbaatar.

Luxury in the Desert

Walk into the vast expanse of the Gobi Desert, and you’ll find yourself in a land of contrasts—where rugged mountains meet endless stretches of golden sand and ancient traditions coexist with modern comforts. From the moment you arrive, you’re enveloped in the spirit of the nomadic people who have called this land home for centuries. Forty felt and canvas gers, modelled on authentic Mongolian dwellings, dot the desert, offering a taste of traditional nomadic life with a touch of modern luxury. And the main lodge, inspired by Buddhist temples and constructed without a single nail, serves as a hub of activity and relaxation with its cosy fireplace, full-service restaurant, and panoramic views of the surrounding desert.

Sustainable Tourism

What truly sets Three Camel Lodge apart is its commitment to sustainability. From the use of 100% solar energy to light all guest gers, to the sourcing of 50% of supplies from within 50 miles, every aspect of the lodge’s operation is guided by a deep respect for the land, the wildlife, and the people of Mongolia. Not to mention eliminating single-use plastics. It is important to stress that beyond its role as a luxury retreat, the Three Camel Lodge is deeply connected to the local community. Through initiatives such as sponsoring English classes and supporting sustainable supply chains, the lodge is empowering the people of the Gobi to preserve their way of life for generations to come.

And as a member of Beyond Green—a global portfolio of hotels and lodges that exemplify sustainable leadership—Three Camel Lodge is paving the way for a more purposeful way to explore the world, where good guests meet good hosts and genuine hospitality meets environmental stewardship.

A trip to Three Camel Lodge, a Nomadic Oasis in the heart of the Gobi, Mongolia

Three Camel Lodge, however, isn’t just about sustainability—it’s also about offering world-class amenities and service to its guests. From fine dining and renowned cocktails to exquisite spa treatments and boundless peacefulness, the lodge provides the perfect base from which to explore the wonders of the Gobi Desert.

Among the many activities available to guests are nomadic archery, yoga, mountain biking, horseback riding, and a chef-led cooking class. And while we encourage these to the utmost, you may find that the greatest pastime here is wrapping yourself in the serenity of the Gobi’s meditative atmosphere. Guests are also invited to venture to the Flaming Cliffs and Khongoryn Els while staying at the lodge. Guests can also learn to prepare native dishes from the lodge’s expert chefs through hands-on cooking classes in the Bulagtai Restaurant.

You get to explore ancient petroglyphs and venture into the foothills of the Gobi-Altai Mountains. Whether you’re galloping across the desert on horseback or trekking through sand dunes on a camel safari, there’s no shortage of excitement to be found in this wild and untamed destination. In fact, you may choose trekking across rolling sand dunes, marvelling at the Flaming Cliffs at sunset, or exploring the fertile Yol Valley and its unique wildlife.

Arshaan Spa

Arshaan Spa, named after the healing natural springs that dot the Mongolian countryside, offers a range of treatments designed to soothe the body and soul. The Arshaan Spa has four private treatment rooms, including a couple’s massage treatment room. Offering a comprehensive menu of therapeutic treatments designed to relax and rejuvenate both body and mind, the menu balances Western treatments, such as massage and body wraps/scrubs, with traditional Eastern therapies, including acupuncture, cupping, and moxibustion. In addition to healing treatments, Arshaan Spa offers beautifying manicures and pedicures. You can indulge in a little pampering after a day of exploration.
