The Contrast of Confidence Dennis Chuene on Ego and Self Esteem
As part of Berlin Fashion Week, the designer presented his new collection on February 6th and offered emotional insights. Impressive looks and a special selection of models represented the different facets of the designer’s psyche. In addition, the attending audience gained access to intimate thoughts, questions, and challenges of the designer through audio records of his therapy sessions. Half of the guests were given access to the designer’s innermost being through headphones, while the other half witnessed the conflict of his ego through speakers. The collection was developed accordingly, embodying the character traits and feelings with each look.
“This show and collection is an exploration of myself, the inner struggles of an individual wrestling with their own self-worth. It was important to me to also invite the audience to think about their own insecurities and the masks they wear in their daily lives”, says Dennis Chuene.
The 20 looks presented impress with their tailored fit and attention to detail. Long, figure-hugging coats meet loose, pleated trousers, among other designs. The designer remained true to his color scheme with this collection: dark tones are broken up with elaborate white embroidery. A highlight of the collection is the MARU sweater – which also served as the inspiration for the entire collection. Made entirely from individual threads, it features a hand-embroidered sonogram image of his unborn child. “This piece made me wonder where my big ego – low self-esteem comes from. From birth or inherited from life?”, says Dennis Chuene.
