De Fichier Episode Three, Future Silhouette, Uniform & Draping

Showcasing their latest collection this September during London Fashion Week with a presentation and showroom, De Fichier is back to present Episode Three of its journey. The dual identity of the uniform, which is contradictory and ironic, has been the main inspiration. On the one hand, it reveals social status, certifies legitimacy, and embodies the leadership of the ruling class to suppress individuality. On the other hand, the uniform identifies group members and helps ensure theestablishment of a unified social order, thus highlighting the individual’s submission to social order and power. Therefore, the uniform serves as a representation of the social order.

With the development of artificial intelligence, uniform culture becomes one of the elements that present human society in the future world, serving as a rule-setter and the upholder of future society
at the same time.

The Application of Uniform Culture

In this collection, De Fichier strikes a perfect balance between conservative and revealing clothes to show the contradictory dual identity of uniforms, expressing the concept of people disobeying orders within the confines of the rules. The collection interprets the uncertainty of the future world by adopting various changes in silhouettes, structural lines, dividing lines, and fabrics of the garments. For example, the adoption of dramatically wide or high-padded shoulders, 3D geometric prints, oversized long sleeves, and square patch pocket designs.

At the same time, De Fichier wants to show a perspective on the future world different from the convention: in many sci-fi movies, the world-building, including the future clothing, language, culture, and society, is subjective and unilateral speculation. As real-world time reaches the point in time depicted in the movies, people would find that their imaginary world, where people “wear silver jumpsuits and enjoy technological brilliance” is different from reality.

On the one hand, the collection presents De Fichier’s definition and elaboration of the future: a world characterised by uncertainty, ambivalence, and social order, which is depicted from a novel perspective, full of changes in the perception of the future as time proceeds. On the other hand, the collection highlights its difference from the mainstream perception of the future world, which is presented through contrasting elements, such as exaggerated shoulders and draped hemlines.
