Despite economic downturn, London Fashion Week celebrates 40 years

London Fashion Week 40th-anniversary celebration, showcasing a retrospective of style trends while acknowledging today's tough economic climate.

Despite the economic recession, celebrities and influencers will be in London from Friday for a five-day long event to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the London Fashion Week.

Unlike other fashion weeks, which mostly feature renowned fashion brands, the London Fashion Week will showcase the 2024 Autumn/Winter lines of about 60 up-and-coming talents, such as Ukrainian Masha Popova and British-Nigerian designer Tolu Coker, alongside other established fashion houses like Burberry. 

The spice of the event is that it is holding during an economic recession that has also hit Britain’s fashion industry with a tough blow, as many young fashion houses are doubting the returns of investing in UK fashion shows.

In an interview with AFP, London Fashion Week’s director Caroline Rush remarked, “The industry, which employs close to 900,000 people in the UK and contributes 21 billion pounds (26 billion dollars) to the British economy, is facing “incredibly challenging times.” But what can be garnered from 40 years is that in the most economically challenging times, you see the most incredible creativity.” She also added, “There’s almost this visceral reaction to what’s happening at home. I’m hoping that the creativity that we see over the next few days will be incredibly uplifting and that it will talk about the role of culture and creativity in society.”

Nautica Names Livvy Dune as Women’s Ambassador 

Nautica has named renowned collegiate gymnast and influencer Olivia (Livvy) Dunne as its latest brand ambassador and the face of its women’s sportswear campaign. According to Livvy, she has always been a fan of the brand since she was a child. “Nautica perfectly aligns with my lifestyle because it values confidence, versatility, and style,”  says the athlete.

The senior VP marketing – lifestyle at Authentic Brands Group, Stefani Fleurant, stated, “We’re excited to welcome Livvy Dunne to the Nautica team. Livvy’s dedication to her craft and ability to inspire millions align perfectly with Nautica women’s sportswear—a line designed for women who are active, confident, and embrace a lifestyle that seamlessly merges fashion with performance.”

Ruby Year: Marc Jacobs Marks 40 Years Anniversary With a Pat McGrath Collaboration 

Ruby Year couldn’t have been celebrated any better. Beauty brand Marc Jacobs has launched the MatteTrance red Lipstick, a limited release from Pat McGrath Labs. Pat McGrath’s classic red, Forbidden Love, comes housed in the cutest tube, adorned with the brand’s popular pout and an allover engraving of the Marc Jacobs logo. The lipstick has a matte finish, yet provides surplus hydration along with a vibrant shade of red that could be made even bolder with some gloss or proper lining. Here’s what Jacobs thinks of the collaboration: “I love Pat. She is a mother. I’m so lucky to have been able to work with her over the years, and her creativity and inspiration are endless.”
